DIDI Rescue Vault — offline vehicle rescue cards for emergency crews
A proof of concept putting verified vehicle rescue cards on the tablet in a fire engine — findable in seconds, and fully functional with no internet at the scene.
Challenge & solution
At a road traffic collision the crew has seconds to establish what they are cutting into. Modern vehicles make that harder, not easier: accident damage obscures identifying features, many models are visually near-identical, and petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen drivetrains each carry different risks. High-voltage batteries, gas generators and pressurised tanks are all in different places depending on the exact variant. And mobile coverage at a motorway incident cannot be assumed.
DIDI Rescue Vault holds verified rescue cards locally on the deployed device. Crews identify a vehicle by VIN scan, licence-plate lookup, AI image recognition, or manual search by manufacturer, model, year and drivetrain. Where a vehicle cannot be identified unambiguously, the app shows every matching variant side by side with the hazard areas and safe cutting zones overlaid, rather than forcing a guess. Safety-relevant systems — airbags and gas generators, pretensioners and SRS control units, body reinforcements and rollover protection, low- and high-voltage batteries, fuel and gas tanks, plus truck and bus specifics — are surfaced directly instead of buried in a full rescue card.
Built on the DIDI platform, so cards are centrally managed, cryptographically signed, and synchronised automatically whenever a connection is available. Crews never download or maintain anything by hand, and only authorised devices can access the data. Licence-plate lookup deliberately uses vehicle data only — no personal keeper data is processed.
Approach
- 01
The seconds that matter
Designed around a crew under time pressure in poor light wearing gloves — not around a data model. Identification first, detail second.
- 02
Offline as the default
Full function with no connectivity, and resilient to infrastructure failure. Synchronisation is a background nicety, never a precondition.
- 03
Honest ambiguity
When the vehicle is not unambiguous the app says so and shows the candidates, rather than presenting a confident wrong answer.
- 04
Zero-trust distribution
Every rescue data package is signed and verified from manufacturer data intake through to the device in the vehicle.
