Challenge & solution
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the rules for crossing a border changed constantly, sometimes from one week to the next. Whether a country was open at all, whether you needed a test, how many vaccinations counted, whether quarantine applied on arrival: all of it differed by destination and could be out of date by the time you booked. People who still had to travel were left piecing it together from official notices, airline pages and news reports.
We started with the people rather than the regulations. In user interviews, run from a structured interview guide, we explored how travellers prepared a trip under these conditions and where they actually got their news. Usability tests then checked whether people could find what they needed and act on it.
On that basis we built Safe Travels as native apps for iOS and Android, to put it all in one place. A world map shows each country’s entry status and active case count at a glance, and search and filters for open, safest and saved countries take you straight to a destination. Each country page separates what to sort out before you leave from what applies once you are there, with a checklist of what entry requires — PCR tests, vaccinations, quarantine hotels, entry forms — and the date the information was last updated. The rules were based on official sources such as the German Federal Foreign Office’s travel and safety advice, so travellers planned against the official position rather than hearsay.
Approach
- 01
User interviews
Structured interviews, run from a written interview guide, with people who needed to travel during the pandemic: how they prepared a trip and what got in the way.
- 02
Where the news came from
Mapped where people actually got their travel information, so the app could replace the patchwork rather than become one more source in it.
- 03
Usability testing
Tested with users to check that people could find the rules for their destination and understood what they had to do before leaving.
- 04
Native on both platforms
Built as native apps for iOS and Android, so the app behaved the way people expect on the phone they already carry.
